E-Commerce Packaging: An Unboxing Experience

People nowadays live for online shopping. Amazon, Walmart, Target, and so many more sites have stepped up their game for online orders. People love to have an amazing unboxing experience from start to finish. As a designer in the packaging world, staying up to date with the E-Commerce packaging trends is a must. So what are people looking for in a package that comes to their door? Why should companies care what the box looks like when it's the product they ordered? Well, let's dive in and talk about it.
First things first: People want an experience. They aren't going to the store, and lingering around and buying more products. They are digitally adding items to their cart that they need and checkout. Even though the shopping has become easier, they still want that excitement for getting something new, even if it comes in the mail. A brown box is fine and all, but when the seller creates an experience for their buyer with the packaging they ship it in, they have a higher chance at shopping there again. Why? People love quality. Yes, the product, but also the packaging.
The best example I can think of, and always use, is Apple. Apple's unboxing experience is so amazing that people often tend to keep the products boxes. Everything from the look, to the feel of the box, to the stickers inside the box, and how the Apple products sit in the box are all key factors for the customer. It feels luxurious and makes the customer feel special. When it comes to shipping other products via mail, Sephora has a great mailing system for products. Items are carefully packaged, and typically sent in a custom printed box for the company. Sometimes that box is put in a plain kraft box to keep it safe, but Sephora wants their customers to feel the luxury of opening their brands box.
So how can one achieve their own aesthetic luxury packaging? Simple: get a game plan together for what you need.
Figure out what kind of box you need.
Figure out if you want inside and outside print, or just outside, or just inside.
Figure out what type of printing you can get done for your budget. There are a wide variety of options, and each facility you would be getting a quote from has different options.
Figure out your timeline for when you need those boxes done.
Figure out what else is going in the box with your product. Tissue paper? is it custom with your brand on it? paper crinkles? bubble wrap? Stickers? A custom note from the CEO?
Every unboxing experience is different because everyone does their branding differently. A key thing to keep in mind is that you want your unboxing to reflect who you are, or who your company is as a whole. Colors, typography, logos, etc. should all reflect those bigger factors. This is typically a big project, so have all hands on deck and make sure all opinions and views are heard. That's just my two cents though.
Sincerely,
