Graphic design isn't something that a lot of businesses or companies consider a priority. This couldn't be more wrong. Behind every strong corporate office, behind every small business, there are design elements that hold them and ground them. Graphic design can almost be considered the backbone of the organization, and yet it is the most understated and ignored factor is business. Don't believe me?

Let's take a look at Apple. Products that are sleek, modern, and expensive in price but people will continually pay out of pocket or even put themselves in debt for their items. Yes, the technology is amazing and people want it for that reason, and to say they own the latest and greatest Apple product. But why is it so successful? Apple creates a consistency and comfort for its users through, yes, its products, but also its design elements. The sleek, modern, simplistic packaging and design choices that apple uses, and contrasts that with the bold and idealistic photography elements makes the brand seem and feel even more luxurious. Apple has taken its graphic design and elevated it to a level of luxury. Everything from the minimal font to the coated packaging makes the consumer feel like they are special and getting their money's worth. Apple has mastered its use of Branding, Typography, UX design, UI design, photography, and any other element that entangles itself with graphic design. Because the know the importance of the viewers eyes scanning their products, and have created a branding that is sought after.

Graphic design is the backbone of any company, and I will stand by this. Graphic design creates the brand of the company, the face that is represented to the world and its competitors, the ability for that company to stand alone and compete in the world, and so much more. Graphic design is essential for a company to get started, stay competitive, and even sky rocket in success. No, designers don't just draw in a sketch book all day and think of pretty things to draw. It's a lot of market place research, psychology, coding, software learning and usage, and designing. To create a strong design and a strong brand one has to know what is going to reach the people of today. What reached them 10 years ago, isn't going to reach them today. 'Graphic design' is a broad term for what people can focus on in this field. There are marketing graphic designers who focus on the market, social media, and how to get the company more seen and more know. There are branding graphic designers who focus on the presentation of the company, the standards that the company uses when creating documents, and so much more. There are UX and UI graphic designers who focus more on the creation of websites and interactions between the site and the users. We don't just draw all day.

So, why do so many companies ignore graphic design, don't utilize the designers, or don't even have their own designers? I couldn't tell you. When it comes to the distribution of money and corporate jargon about employment, graphic designers are usually at the bottom of the barrel. Which is unfortunate. Companies tend to suffer internally and even externally to the world when design is considered last, or not at all. It can make a company look out of date, it can make a website not be user friendly, it can create a brand identity crisis, and much more. All of which people don't consider a big problem. So try thinking of it this way: If your company doesn't care about the graphic design, or thinks it's pointless, just know that there is a competitor out there who is utilizing a design team and is thriving because of it. Because they have people there who can answer the questions of "Why is this generation interested in this," or "Why do our customer's prefer that."

Graphic design is so much more than just creating a pretty logo, a pretty illustration, or putting some pretty colors together. It is a thought out process that has time, research and effort put into various projects for which the goals are often related to how to make the company grow or how to make the company stand out. Have more questions on graphic design and the specific areas of it? Stay tuned, because we are going to cover as much as possible.

Sincerely,

Just Your Average Graphic Designer in totally Digital World
